Living Conditions

As Britain became more urbanised people moved to cities like Hull to find work.

Cities became very crowded. Factories and houses burnt a lot of coal. This meant that cities were smokey and heavily polluted. This picture shows the busy docks and the new railways.

Poorer people usually lived in the city centre near where they worked.  The city centres were very crowded and dirty. Richer people moved out of the city.

They lived in parks or on tree lined avenues.
